allocation of Rs 750.45 crores for 2017-18, Cooperative minister Alok Mehta said people found indulged in ripening of fruits like banana and mango with harmful chemical (calcium) carbide will be punished with the imprisonment of six months with a provision of fine between Rs 2 to Rs 10 lakh.

Mehta said that acetylene gas, a chemical compound, is used for fruit ripening which develops neuro problems.

On opposition's charge of tardy and low paddy procurement, the minister said the agencies concerned (PACS and Vyapar Mandal) have till date procured 12.75 lakh MT of paddy against last year's 11.50 lakh MT around the same time.

The paddy procurement is much better than last year, he said adding that because of the better paddy procurement by the government agencies this year, paddy was being sold at Rs 1350 per quintal against Rs 900 per quintal prior to government's procurement.

"We (the state govt) make procurements from farmers as we are a welfare state and we don't have any commercial benefits for profit motive," Mehta said while asking BJP members to get the MSP rate hiked instead of demanding announcement of bonus from the state government.

The opposition members led by BJP later boycotted the government's reply as they found the reply unsatisfactory.

Those who participated in the debate included- Upendra Prasad, Dilip Kumar Rai, Ran Vijay Singh, Krishna Kumar Singh.
