Serial killer Udayan Das who had allegedly killed his parents and live-in partner was produced at a local court at Bankura district in West Bengal amidst  tight security. Chief judicial magistrate Arun Kumar Nandy sent him for an eight-day police custody.

Thousands of people had gathered at the court campus to get a glimpse of Das. Members of Ganatantra Samanadhikar Narimukti, a women’s wing of CPIM chanted slogans demanding death penalty for Das. Some also pelted stones at Das. He was wearing a white T Shirt, white trousers and black blazer. In the entire duration of the hearing which began at around 2 pm and lasted for about 30 minutes there was no sign of remorse on his face and he sat in the court expressionless, adjusting his hair from time to time.

Das was brought to Kolkata from Raipur in Chhatisgarh yesterday and from there was sent to Bankura on road. Police had earlier started a case against him under sections 365 and 368 of the IPC but later added sections 302 and 201 of the IPC. After the hearing Sukhendu Hira, SP, Bankura said that they would try to get answers to various questions in the next eight days that they have Das’ custody. “At present our main intention to establish the motive of Das behind the murders and we will do anything necessary for that,” he said.

Initially Das had confessed to killing his girlfriend Akansha Sharma because of a third person who he thought she was interested in but police did not believe this theory/ They suspect monetary gain may be the primary motive behind all three murders.

A team of police are on the stand by to go to Bhopal or Delhi, if need be. Police said that last night Das had asked for fish in dinner but he was given a vegetarian meal and this morning he was given biscuits, tea and fritters before he was taken to the court. The next hearing is on February 15, 2017. Police have recovered his passport, Aadhar card, a laptop, two mobile phones and Akansha’s bank documents from Das’ Bhopal residence. Das had been accused of killing his parents around 2011 and bury them at their native place in Chhattisgarh. Later he got acquainted with Akansha on a social platform and killed her in 2016 and subsequently entombed her.
