Mystery shrouds the sudden disappearance of Naxal leader, KN Ramachandran, the general secretary of the Naxalite outfit CPI(ML) (Red Star) since Sunday afternoon from West Bengal.

In a state issued by the Central Committee of CPI(ML) Red Star, it said that the general secretary Ramachandran is missing since Sunday. “K N Ramachandran, General Secretary, CPI (ML) Red Star, who reached Howrah railway station by around 5 PM on 22nd January 2017. He is missing since then. All attempts to contact comrade K N Ramachandran over his mobile phone are in vain. Comrade travelled from Lucknow to Howrah to declare solidarity with the people and the CPI (ML) Red Star comrades who are resisting super imposition of a power grid by Mamata Banerjee Government at Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal,” read the portion of the statement.

The anti-land grab movement that began in West Bengal’s Bhangar over the setting up of a substation of Power Grid Corporation Limited on January 16 is reportedly being led by CPI(ML) Red Star. The CPI(ML) Red Star, along with its senior leaders are leading villagers against the setting up of the substation. Villagers are under the impression that it would lead to the transmission of electricity through the high-tension wires passing through the villages.

Several leaders of the CPI(ML) Red Star are under the scanner of the West Bengal police – Alik Chakraborty, Sharmistha Chowdhury and Pradip Singh Thakur. Ramachandran, the general secretary of the party, hails from Kerala and was scheduled for a visit to Bhangar on Monday after reaching Kolkata on Sunday afternoon.

However, hours after he reached the city, he could not be traced claimed the leaders of his party. Several leaders also filed a complaint with the Missing Person’s Squad, Kolkata Police.

On the other hand, the police maintained that they were not aware of his whereabouts. Leaders of his party claim that he has been detained illegally as he was to meet the villagers of Bhangar and lead the anti land-grab movement against the Mamata Banerjee-led government.

“We suspect the involvement of Mamata’s notorious Special Police in comrade’s missing. We demand the Mamata Govt. to unconditionally produce Com KN Ramachandran immediately. We appeal to the communists, progressive democratic forces and like-minded people for their wholehearted solidarity and support at this critical juncture,” added the statement.
