A West Bengal police constable has been arrested on charges of raping a minor girl inside the police barrack.

58-year-old Haridas Roy, who is just two years away from his retirement, had allegedly raped a minor on September 6, within the barracks.

Dinhata MLA Udayan Guha said that the victim, a 11-year-old student of Class IV, had been quiet about the incident for some days. Later she revealed it to her mother and a police report was filed. On September 16, Roy was arrested. He was produced at the court the next day and had been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.

The victim would help her mother in running an eatery that was frequently visited by the police officers. On September 6, she went to deliver bread and vegetables to the police station when she was forced into a room and raped, police said.

“Her mother first confronted the constable concerned who threatened them with dire consequences if they tried to talk about it. Later she discussed the matter with her daughter’s teachers and with their help filed a complaint at the police station,” said an official of the police station.

District superintendent of police Anoop Jaiswal said that an investigation was immediately initiated as the complaint was filed.
