The elite National Security Guards (NSG) were put on standby to rush to Srinagar minutes after the terror attack on the Border Security Force (BSF) battalion campus on Tuesday but the Jammu and Kashmir government declined the Centre's offer.

Senior government sources said the state government felt it was confident of dealing with the situation and did not require NSG. "We offered them all sorts of cooperation including sending NSG. But the state government said no, saying they can deal with it on their own," said a senior government official in the security establishment.

The operation to flush out terrorists was carried out by BSF, CRPF and state police. The Army was part of the outer cordon. After one terrorist was gunned down by an alert BSF sentry the other took shelter in the building and started firing. Officials say the operation was a perfect example of good cooperation and communication with all forces.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh complimented the security forces for successfully eliminating the terrorists.

"I have spoken to the DG CRPF and DG BSF. It was a good operation that they have conducted," he said. After killing the three terrorists the security forces are now on the hunt for a half a dozen more fidayeens who are suspected to be part of the same terror that infiltrated in August and split into smaller groups targeting security establishments. There were around 12 terrorists who were part of the group. While three others were killed during the Pulwama encounter when they attacked a police complex the others are still on the run.

Intelligence inputs indicate that with local terrorists not able to carry out terror strikes there is an increased attempt by Pakistani terrorists to infiltrate Kashmir and target security forces and their establishments.

NSG specialises in anti-terror operations specifically those where a hostage situation is possible. The last time NSG led an operation was during the Pathankot terror attack in 2016 when terrorists had entered an Air Force station. It took them over two days to sanitise the air base, The force was also part of the operations during the Mumbai 26\11 attack.
