On the basis of suggestions given by a team of experts that plying of heavy vehicles like buses, trucks would be a "bit risky" and that heavy expenses were required to pull down the entire structure, the government is planning to construct the collapsed portion and allow light vehicles on it, a senior officer at the state secretariat said.
"The government has already made huge expenses in building the flyover and the amount of funds required to pull it down will be equally huge. Going by the estimates and other options it has been decided to rebuild the collapsed portion of the flyover," the officer said.
And as per suggestions of the experts, only light vehicles, mainly two-wheelers will be allowed to take the flyover-route, he said.
"Two-wheelers like bikes can be allowed. In fact, we are also thinking of allowing bicycles and vans to take the flyover," the officer said.
On when the construction work for rebuilding the collapsed portion of the flyover will start, he said, "Planning is going on ... It is still not decided when the construction will start."
A high-powered committee headed by the state Chief Secretary Basudeb Banerjee had submitted its report in December last about the Vivekananda Road flyover collapse in which 26 people were killed in March last.
The findings of the committee were forwarded to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In its report, the committee had also mentioned the findings of the IIT Kharagpur, he said.
The IIT-Kharagpur report had stated that the design of the flyover was faulty and there was lack of use of proper construction material, faulty design approval and wrongful project execution by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).
The flyover had collapsed on March 31 last killing 26 people and senior officials of a Hyderabad-based construction firm along with officials of the KMDA were arrested in this connection.
