Thiruvananthpuram MP and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor compared the highly venerated former British PM Winston Churchill to Adolf Hitler, saying that Churchill had as much blood on his hands as the German dictator.

Speaking to Viji Alles of UKAsian during the launch of his upcoming book Inglorious Empire, Tharoor said Churchill's decisions at the time of Great Bengal Famine resulted in millions of deaths. "I certainly think Mr Churchill needs a very severe re examination. He has as much blood on his hands as Hitler does. Particularly the decisions that he personally signed off on during the so-called Great Bengal Famine of 1943-44 when 4.3 million people died because of decisions that he took or endorsed remains a permanent stain, as far as I am concerned. "

"Not only did the British pursue their old policy of not helping victims of this famine which had been created by their policies but Churchill persisted on exporting grain from Bengal to Europe, not to feed actual ‘Sturdy Tommies’, to use their phrase, and to add to the buffer stocks that were being piled up in the event of a future invasion by Greece and Yugoslavia."

He said during the famine, Churchill ensured that ships carrying wheat coming to India from Australia were diverted to Europe. When British officials wrote to him describing how the people were starving, Churchill replied asking if Gandhi was dead yet.

Tharoor added that while the British may insist on hailing Churchill as some sort of a messiah of freedom and democracy, he thinks the ex-British leader is really one of the most evil rulers of the 20th Century who is only fit to stand in the company of the likes of Hitler, Mao and Stalin.

The author has also suggested that British schools should teach colonial history to make people aware of the atrocities that were committed.
