A day after dna highlighted the conflict of interest between VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble in the selection of the latter as the coach of Team India, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) issued a rejoinder saying Laxman had left Kumble’s firm ahead of joining the selection team.

dna report on Thursday had highlighted the fact that Laxman was the second highest shareholder in Kumble’s company, Tenvic Sports Promotion Pvt Ltd.

The BCCI, in a written statement, said, “Mr. Laxman informed BCCI that he had sold his total shareholding of 5 per cent in Tenvic Sport (sic) in the month of March 2016 and also declared that he no longer held any shareholding or any official or unofficial position in Tenvic Sports. This took place prior to the commencement of the operations of this Committee”

However, neither Laxman nor Kumble responded to dna’s communications with them on the issue.

The BCCI said, “Mr. Laxman was in no position of a conflict of interest at the time of selection of the head coach of Indian cricket team.”

When contacted, the BCCI spokesperson over phone said that shares had already been sold on March 31, so there was no conflict of interest. “The Registrar of Companies change happens post the filing of tax paperwork. So it is very clear that VVS Laxman had followed the procedure,” he told this paper.

In the January 2015 judgment where the Supreme Court barred the then chairman N Srinivasan from contesting polls, the apex court had noted, “The expectations of millions of cricket lovers have lowered considerably the threshold of tolerance for any mischief, wrong-doing or corrupt practices, which ought to be weeded out of the system. Conflict of interest is one area which appears to have led to the current confusion and serious misgivings in the public mind as to the manner in which BCCI is managing its affairs.”
