The visitors gallery at the sub jail here was inaugurated by DGP (Prisons) Satyanarayana Rao today at the jail premises.

The gallery was constructed at a cost of Rs 17.5 lakh for the convenience of the public who come to visit the prison and the relatives of the prisoners.

The new visitors parlour is divided in two blocks with five counters each with bullet proof glasses and monitored by CCTV cameras.

Talking to reporters after the inauguration, Rao said a new central prison would come up on the outskirts of the city at a cost of Rs 200 crore.

The new prison would include hospital, library for prisoners and high class apartments for prison officers, he said.

He said the sub-jail here was the most sensitive after Bengaluru jail in the state. The department was taking steps to improve the facilities in both the jails.

A metal detector electric security pole has been already sanctioned for Mangaluru jail, he said.

Rao also laid foundation for a new entrance to the prison to be taken up at a cost of Rs 12.5 lakh.
