A former news editor with The Indian Express in Chandigarh, Karam Jeet Singh, 66, and his mother Gurcharan Kaur, 89, used to live together, while Singh's sister Yashpal Kaur visited them often.
A veteran journalist and his aged mother were found murdered at their home in Mohali on Saturday.

She came to the house around 1 pm on Saturday, to find the two of them lying in pools of blood in separate rooms. The house was ransacked.
Singh's throat had been slit with a sharp-edged weapon while his mother was reportedly strangulated to death. According to the police, Singh must have tried to fight the attackers as he had deep injury marks on his abdomen and hands. The forensic teams were called in to examine the blood stains on the house's door, which was found to be open. There was a trail of blood going from the door to inside the house.
While Singh's relatives claimed that some household items, including his old car and a television, were missing, in its initial investigation, the police have ruled out burglary."It is too early to say anything. Prima facie, burglary does not appear to be the motive behind the crime. We have some important clues in the case and will nab the accused soon,"IG Pramod Kumar said.
According to the police, the incident took place at 10 pm on Friday night. Singh had last talked to his brother, who lives in Chandigarh, around 7:30 pm. The post-mortem report is awaited.Meanwhile, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the IG, Crime, has been formed to probe the double murder, on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. The CM also directed DGP Suresh Arora to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident, besides directing the police to step up security in the area and take steps to ensure safety and security of people.
Expressing deep shock over the incident, former Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal said: "The media has lost a leading light, who was one of the senior-most news editors of this region. I have fond memories of interacting with him. He was a most upright and professional journalist."
Badal further said the perpetrators of this ghastly crime must be booked as soon as possible. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sukhpal Khaira also condemned the incident.
Singh started his career with the Chandigarh edition of the Indian Express, before working briefly with the Times of India. He had last worked for The Tribune in Chandigarh. The incident has led to a shock wave among the journalist fraternity in the region, who condemned the incident and called for speedy justice.
