In an attempt to hoodwink the cops, a petrol pump in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow 'vanished' just before the raid team reached the spot, reports NDTV.

The owners removed and hid the petrol dispensing machines. They also put a board of 'Under Renovation'.

But none of this could deceive the Special Task Force which had come there to confirm suspected petrol theft. They had seen dozens of 'abandoned' pumps since the last few days.

Police recently have come across a chip which enables the pumps to give less fuel to the customers.

1000 of such chips are currently installed in petrol pumps across Uttar Pradesh, which makes for illicit profit worth Rs. 15 lakh a day. So, if a customer asks for a litre of petrol, he will get  50 - 100 ml less petrol, though the reading will show that one litre of the fuel was dispensed. "In our past experience on raids in seven petrol pumps, a chip is inserted into these mother boards that quickens the pulse rate for fuel dispensing using these wires...those chips seem to have been removed in a rush," said the officer.
