With almost one crore postcards from towns and villages across Uttar Pradesh, it’s raining demands and dreams – some two lakh actually— at the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) office.

As elections draw closer, a dozen-odd youngsters are hard at work in a 20x20 feet room in the BJP office, pouring over the deluge of postcards scribbled with many aspirations, desires and wishes from people in the state. Sources said over two lakh topics ranging from farmer woes to Japanese encephalitis have been identified after sifting though the nearly one crore postcards.

The postcards were put into the cleverly named Akanksha Petis (aspiration box), collected by party workers who travelled to villages on motorbikes under a programme called UP ki Mann ki baat and set up in various places in urban areas.

Sources familiar with the contents said the farmers’ expectations related to loans, interest waivers and sugarcane prices and the party hopes to weave in some of the dreams into its vision document.

The postcards are being sorted in the research and analysis wing of the BJP office after which they will be used as inputs for the vision document. While revealing that several complaints dealt with food, shelter, health and corruption, sources claimed that demonetization had received a “mostly positive response”.

As the Modi government sharpens its focus on the downtrodden and farmers, particularly after demonetization, the BJP is exploring ways of factoring in the soaring expectations in its vision document which spells out its promises. With the model code of conduct in place, the government is barred from launching welfare schemes ahead of elections, beginning February 11. A BJP leader said the union budget, which has been advanced to February 1, could reflect the government’s attempts to reach out to the poor and farmers.

Backroom prep

It’s full steam ahead, party leaders said. Besides the research section, the party office in Lucknow, the nerve centre of the party’s electioneering in the state, has around 15 rooms, including a sprawling war room, and nearly 100 people engaged in various aspects of elections in the party office. From Lucknow, the BJP can interact with New Delhi and its 92 organisational districts through video conferencing.

“There is a monitoring cell for video raths, digital media, UP Ki Mann Ki Baat, Parivartan video, Kamal Sandesh, booth tracking and election management,” said state party vice president JPS Rathore.
