Unrest in Srinagar, civilian killed in firing

Authorities suspended mobile internet services in the area since morning as a precautionary measure to prevent rumour mongering.

A 25-year-old civilian was killed and several others injured in a clash between security forces and stone pelters in South Kashmir's Pulwama district. Security forces took to firing pellets and bullets to disperse a violent mob protesting the killing of top Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists Waseem Ahmad Shah and Nisar Ahmad Mir at Litter in Pulwama.

Police said the civilian was identified as Gulzar Ahmad Mir of Allaipora, Lassipora. Another civilian Mohammad Ashraf Mir sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences at Srinagar.

Locals said clashes erupted in the area after the news of killing of two terrorists spread in the area. Scores of people took to streets, raised pro-freedom slogans, and pelted stones at security officers. The forces first used smoke shells to disperse the mob and later took to firing. Dozens of people sustained injuries in the incident.

Following the incident, a complete shutdown was observed in the area. Authorities suspended mobile internet services in the area since morning as a precautionary measure to prevent rumour mongering.

Joint Resistance Leadership of separatists, an amalgam of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani, Moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik, who spearheaded last year's unrest, have strongly condemned the killing of civilian at Pulwama.

"Kashmir issue has become human tragedy where bullets are showered even on the peaceful protestors. Our heart goes to the family of the deceased", said the three leaders in a statement.

Main opposition party Ntional Conference expressed grief and sorrow over the killing of Gulzar Ahmed Mir in an incident of firing in Pulwama.

Condemning the killing, NC state spokesperson Junaid Azim Mattu extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family for their inconsolable loss.

Meanwhile, a cop was thrashed and tied with a pole by local residents after a girl complained that he was clicking her pictures in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir. The cop was later handed over to police.
