Union ministers took part in the ‘Swachhta hi Sewa’ campaign on Sunday and underscored the Modi government’s commitment towards a “clean, healthy and strong” India. The campaign has been carried out by various government departments, on a day which marked PM Narendra Modi’s 67th birthday.

Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Mahesh Sharma, Hardeep Singh Puri and Alphons Kannanthanam took part in the campaign, which coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, in different parts of the country, and stressed on the importance of cleanliness.

Taking part in the campaign organised at Delhi Cantonment here, Defence Minister Sitharaman said her ministry will carry out a drive to remove garbage from high altitude areas and glaciers.

She said, “(If) we can send Mangalyaan to Mars and provide services to the world through our IT sector then why cannot we keep our environment clean?”

Interestingly, Union Minister of State (Independent) for Tourism Alphons Kannanthanam went to the India Gate on Sunday to kick off a campaign to clean prominent religious and tourist sites across the country, little did he expect it to be so clean.

In order to flag off the campaign, volunteers at the event then went about collecting things to be strewn across the area so that the minister could clean it.

Once the event was flagged off, Kannanthanam said, “This cannot be a campaign for only one day in a year. It cannot be an event that only the government carries out. Cleanliness is a virtue everyone must adopt in their everyday lives,” he said.

Across 15 prominent locations, which has been divided five regions, celebrities will be roped in to popularise the campaign. These include Mumbai’s Juhu Beach, the ghats at Rishikesh, Kolkata’s Dakshineshwar Temple and Belur Math, the Charminar, Guwahati’s Kamakhya Temple, the Loktak Lake in Manipur, the Kovalam beach, Pushkar Temple, etc.
