At least two people were killed and five others wounded after a Karachi-bound passenger train, Shalimar Express, collided with an oil tanker in Punjab's Sheikhupura district leading to a huge explosion in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Minister for Railways Khuwaja Saad Rafique said the oil tanker stuck on the railway crossing due to a broken axle and could not move as the train approached.

"Three carriages near the engine had caught fire after the collision, but the fire did not affect the other carriages much," Dawn quoted Najam Khan, spokesperson for the Pakistan Railways.

Firefighting vehicles doused the fire after more than two hours

The injured were sent to the district headquarters hospital.
