A gold smuggling cartel was busted by a joint operation conducted by the Air Intelligence Unit of the Mumbai Customs and the Sahar police and two Kenyan nationals were arrested.

The police managed to recover 22.8 kg of gold worth Rs 6 crore.

The accused have been identified as Abdala Ali and Ibrahim Ali Hussein. Both work as crew members for Kenya Airways.

According to police officials, Abdala Ali had brought 156 gold biscuits and had concealed them in custom-made kneecaps and a waist belt, which he wore under his trousers.

"Abdula Ali was moving around in an awkward way, which aroused our suspicion. He then went to meet his accomplice at Hyatt Regency near the International Airport where his accomplice Ibrahim had come to collect the gold. “We received a tip-off and laid a trap in the hotel and nabbed the two people with the help of the Sahar police,” an AIU official said.

The gold has been seized and the duo has been booked under relevant sections of the Customs Act.

Earlier this month, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Thursday held a crew member associated with Jet Airways at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) here for allegedly smuggling foreign currencies worth over $3,90,000 (Rs 2.63 crore). The accused, who was about to board a Hong Kong flight when he was detained, is suspected to be part of a larger smuggling racket.

According to DRI officials, the accused Agar Rislie was intercepted based on specific intelligence. “He was carrying with him $3,90,000 in his check-in baggage. The currency was concealed in five leather diary covers. He was intercepted at the Customs counter after immigration at 12.45 am on Thursday, as he did not mention about foreign currency in his declaration,” said an official.
