Trinamool Congress took out a rally on Thursday against BJP accusing it of pursuing "vendetta politics" against the party's leaders and trying to harass opposition parties.

Thousands of women activists of TMC led by senior leaders like Chandrima Bhattacharya, Sashi Panja, Smita Bakshi and carrying placards against the Narendra Modi government marched from College Square to Esplande.

This is the first of the three scheduled rallies that the party has planned to oppose the alleged "witch hunting" against its leaders, who are purportedly seen accepting money in a sting operation.

The other two rallies are planned on March 31 and April 3.

"As our party supremo Mamata Banerjee has raised her voice against demonetization, they are trying to malign us. The BJP government is using CBI and other agencies against us. It was during the Left Front regime that chit funds started in Bengal, then why not a single Left leader was arrested by CBI? They are targeting our leaders," Bhattacharya said.

She said central government agencies were "trying to paint the opposition black" by making false cases against the opposition leaders.

"What wrong did TMC Lok Sabha leader Sudip Banerjee commit that he is lodged in a jail for the last three months? He is severely ill and he is going through such a harrowing experience."

Bhattachraya said the threats of CBI and ED can't cow down TMC from raising its voice in the interest of the masses. "The more you (BJP) use such tricks, the more the protests will intensify."
