When the Edappadi K Palaniswami’s government moves the motion of confidence in the Tamil Nadu assembly on Saturday, it will be the second time the ruling AIADMK going through the trust motion in the last three decades.
The ongoing power struggle between former Chief Minister

O Panneerselvam and AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala following Jayalalithaa’s death, the AIADMK split into two factions — Jayalalithaa and Janaki. Similarly after the demise of party founder MG Ramachandran Janaki in 1987, the wife of MGR, was sworn-in as CM by Governor SL Khurana and asked her to prove majority on the floor of the house in 21 days.

As the fight between Jayalalithaa and Janaki faction went out of control, the police entered the House and lathi-charged the legislators.

The Janaki camp has support of 97 MLAs while Jayalalithaa’s group had 33 MLAs. The Congress which was an ally of AIADMK, had 61 MLAs but ahead of the voting decided not to back both the warring factions. Janaki faction which was counting on the Congress’s support, got the support of actor and Congress leader Sivaji Ganesan and five legislators including EVKS Elangovan who were supporters of the actor decided to resign. “We were followers of Sivaji then and we wanted the Congress to support Janaki government. But some people gave wrong information to the party leadership and they advised us to support only the united AIADMK. So we decided to resign and the Speaker accepted it,” former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Elangovan told DNA.

The trouble began when Speaker PH Pandian, who is now in the Panneerselvam camp, announced that he has accepted the resignation of five Congress MLAs. As the situation was going out of control, he disqualified the AIADMK MLAs supporting Jayalalithaa. Immediately clash broke out between the two factions.
