Tension is palpable on the streets of Srinagar after separatists called for observing July 20 as `black day’ on the instance of Pakistan even as the army chief General Dalbir Singh is arriving here to chair a high-level security review meeting.

Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani, moderate leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik in a joint statement have asked people to hoist black flags over all the residential houses, commercial establishments and important landmarks and squares.

“People should also observe a blackout from 8:30 pm to 9 pm by switching off all the bulbs. People should also hold programmes highlighting the atrocities carried by Indian forces in every small and big mosques", said a joint spokesman of the three separatist leaders.

Leaders also called upon the Kashmiri diaspora to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir on Friday by staging demonstrations and processions to protest the killings, maiming and blinding of innocent civilians and the atrocities carried against them by the frenzied forces.

Giving a clean chit to Pakistan in fanning protests, Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik termed union home minister Rajnath Singh’ statement as "baseless, far from the truth and an attempt to mislead the people of India and the international community".

“By accusing Pakistan, New Delhi is trying to give legitimacy to the atrocities its forces are carrying  out against the people of Kashmir’, the spokesman added.

More than 44 people have died in the violence since unrest began after the killing of Hizbul Mujhadeen commander Burhan Wani on July 8. Around 2115 persons injured during the prevailing law and order situation, 1924 have been discharged from the hospitals while 191 are still undergoing treatment including 70 persons with eye injuries. Plus 1500 CRPF men have also been injured in the stone pelting

Curfew remained imposed in most parts of the valley to prevent any escalation in the protests and street violence for the 12th day on Wednesday.

For the fifth day, Kashmir woke up to the morning without newspapers. Mehbooba Mufti government shifted SSP Budgam Fayaz Ahmad Lone in an apparent bid to deflect the blame of raiding the newspaper offices on him. However, the editors and owners were not convinced and decided not to resume publication unless government own the ban and issue a statement guaranteeing that media operations will not be hampered.

Army chief will be reaching Srinagar on Wednesday to chair the security review meeting. Counter-insurgency operations, strengthening of anti-infiltration and anti-militancy grids and arrangements for Amarnath yatra are high on the agenda, sources said.
