Tanzanian student assaulted: Condemn this type of action, says Rahul Gandhi

A team of the External Affairs Ministry and High Commissioner of Tanzania will visit Bengaluru on Friday to look into the situation emerged out of the attack on the student.

"I 100% condemn this type of action, strict action should be taken, and it would be taken," said Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi when reporters sought his opinion regarding the attack on the Tanzanian girl student in Bengaluru.

"The moment I heard about that issue, I spoke to general secretary and I mentioned to the general secretary to look into the matter and speak to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah," he said.

"I made it very clear to both of them that strict action should be taken, and it would be taken," Gandhi added.

Earlier, Gandhi has sought a report from Siddaramaiah in this regard.

A team of the External Affairs Ministry and High Commissioner of Tanzania will visit Bengaluru on Friday to look into the situation emerged out of the attack on the student.

Expressing regret over the incident, MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup assured necessary legal action against the culprits. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj took a high-level meeting on Thursday in view of the incident, which was attended by the Foreign Secretary.

Swaraj has sought detailed report from Commissioner of City, Bengaluru on the incident. The Home Ministry has also sought a report from the Karnataka Government over the incident. It has also sought details of steps taken for the protection of the victim.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju has termed the alleged assault of a Tanzanian woman as a matter of shame saying the country will not tolerate any racial discrimination. The 21-year-old Tanzanian student was allegedly beaten up and stripped by a mob.
