Tamil Nadu's RS Puram police station won the award for the best police station in the country in the category of SMART Police Stations, an initiative by Ministry of Home Affairs.

Station House Officer T Jothi, Inspector (law and order), received the award from Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at the all India conference of Director Generals/Inspector Generals of Police held at BSF Academy Tekanpur in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday.

Apart from RS Puram Station in Coimbatore city, Chennai's K4 police station has been ranked fifth by the MHA in the countrywide exercise. Panjagutta police station in Telangana, Gudumba police station in Lucknow and Dhupguri in West Bengal were ranked second, third and fourth respectively. The concept of SMART Police (S-Sensitive and Strict; M-Modern with mobility; A- Alert and Accountable; R- Reliable and Responsive; T- Trained and Techno-savvy) was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 49th annual conference Directors General/Inspectors General held in Guwahati in November 2014.

Jothi attributed the station winning the award to the teamwork of Tamil Nadu police. "No single person was responsible for the award. It is a team from the top to the constable level," he said. "The station has been chosen as the best in the nation based on 80 parameters including basic amenities, crime detection, property recovery, cleanliness and citizen-friendly," said Jothi.

The RS Puram station has an exclusive room for visitors, a waiting hall, investigation room, a receptionist cabin, treated drinking water and a ramp for the disabled. The all-woman police (east) has set up a crèche for the kids accompanying petitioners.

"Many women bring along children to the AWPS wing of the station on issues ranging from harassment and family issues. The kid accompanying the parents who otherwise listen to all the conversation and inquiries can make use of the crèche facilities in the kid's areas," he said.

Two months ago, a committee from the Quality Council of India had visited the RS Puram station for assessment. It inspected the facility and checked parameters such as rate of crime, convictions, recovery of property, cleanliness and enquired with the public.

2 UP POLICE STATIONS AMONG TOP 10

  • Ram Surat Sonkar, two-time gallantry award winner, and the SHO of Gudamba Police Station in Lucknow which ranked three in the country, has his own style of policing. He is tough with criminals and soft, suave and polite in dealing with public. “He is different and taught us next level of policing, mixing technology and victims’ human emotions,” confided one of his colleagues.

  • But Sonkar gives the credit to his team for the honour. “A leader is only successful when his team works with the same zeal and philosophy to serve public better and most humane way,” said a proud Sonkar, who had sustained bullet injuries in an encounter with criminals.
