In the backdrop of Dalit JNU Scholar Muthu Krishnan's suicide, scores of teachers and students from various universities in the national capital gathered on Wednesday to discuss the issue of "systematic discrimination in academic institutions" across the nation.

Students associated with the left-backed Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA) alleged that "systematic discrimination" was being carried out again students from Dalit and marginalised backgrounds in JNU.

"Despite being one of the best universities, JNU also carries out this discrimination right from the process of admission up to completion of the course," alleged Balgangadhar Tikal of BAPSA.

Echoing Tikal's sentiment, another student from the Varsity shared his experience on how he was allegedly discriminated because of his caste. "There is no conducive atmosphere for students coming from a socially marginalized background in JNU," he said.

Several students and faculty members from Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia, and other universities also shared similar experiences. "Despite having guidelines issued by UGC for universities in 2012, there is no provision of proper protection of rights and entitlements for students and teachers from marginalized communities and there is a continued violation of rights of students for Dalits and marginalised communities," said a faculty member at DU.

They also demanded a CBI inquiry into the suicides that had taken place in all the universities across the nation.

Krishnan, a first year MPhil student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) had allegedly committed suicide at his friend's house in South Delhi's Munirka Vihar, on Monday.

While he did not leave any suicide note, his last Facebook post spoke about the "discriminatory" admission policy in JNU. "There is no equality in MPhil/Ph.D. Admission, there is no equality in viva voce, there is a denial of equality, denying Professor Sukhadeo Thorat recommendation, denying students protest places in ad-block, denying the education of the marginals. When equality is denied, everything is denied," his post said.
