The BJP does not produce, write or direct movies, Union minister Suresh Prabhu said on Monday, rubbishing allegations that the party was sponsoring the upcoming film, Indu Sarkar, which is set against the Emergency period.

Prabhu addressed a function organised by the BJP Mumbai’s unit to mark the anniversary of the dreaded Emergency that was imposed during Indira Gandhi’s rule.

During his address, Prabhu ridiculed the allegations that the country was facing an Emergency-like situation. He said there are no restrictions concerning the media’s freedom of expression under the NDA’s rule. He added that social media has flourished under the present government’s rule.

Laying emphasis on why the BJP wanted to touch upon the topic of Emergency, he said that such functions underline the importance of freedom of expression. He said that a day would come when one might ask why we celebrate Independence Day.

Addressing a gathering at the event, the minister also dismissed claims of the country going through an emergency- like situation under the Narendra Modi government.

“It is a false accusation against the BJP. We want to keep Indian media completely free from any restrictions,” he said.
