Thanks to a bumper onion crop this time, the railways will be providing one extra goods train,  in addition to existing three, to dispatch onions from Nashik to five destinations. With this, the total number of trains carrying onions will rise to four from Monday, said Central Railway in a statement.

"This year the onion crop is bumper crop, almost double of last year. The Railway was already providing 50% extra goods train than last year. Now, it has further enhanced the carrying capacity of onion by 30% and to 5 goods train per day from onion belt in Nasik district, this onion will go to Northern, Eastern, North Eastern and East Coast parts of India, it will help markets to procure extra onion from farmers," said a CR official.

Onion farmers of Nashik, which produces almost 30% of the total onion production in the country, have been finding themselves in the penury as they have failed to recover their cost of farming due to falling prices of the kitchen staple.

"Suresh Prabhuji had received demands to run additional goods train from Nashik, following which he ordered today to run one more goods train from February 20 and we are going to follow this tomorrow," senior officer Narendra Patil told PTI.
