Sri Sri Ravishankar, the founder of Art of Living, on Thursday strongly expressed that sentiments of people should be respected. Speaking to World Is One News (WION), he said, "It is an important festival for the people of Tamil Nadu. They need proper representation."
The spiritual leader said that Makar Sankranti and Pongal are bigger festivals than Diwali for Tamils and this sentiment must be respected. "The bulls are decorated and well taken care of, and if you ban them it is like not allowing sisters to visit their brothers on the festival of Bhai dooj," he added. Sri Sri Ravishankar argued that the bull sport is not only confined to Tamil Nadu but is prevalent in other states as well.
When asked about the cruelty inflicted on these bulls, he added that specific cases can be looked into but to ban the festival in its entirety is not right. He insisted that stringent laws and rules should be implemented instead of banning the festival. He even argued that if bulls are not used during the festival then they are sent to slaughter houses anyway.
"If cruelty against animals has to be stopped, slaughter houses need to be closed down. Banning them would eventually diminish the stock of the native breed," he pointed. Sri Sri Ravishankar made it clear that he is not against progressive law-making.
"We are missing the point. We have to look into the process of the festival. It has riled up the whole community and this needs to be factored," he said. He also admitted that witch-hunt against PETA must end. Tamil Nadu CM O Panneerselvam has submitted a memorandum to PM Modi to bring in an amendment to override the Supreme Court's verdict.
