As World No Tobacco Day falls on May 31, students of MGM dental college and hospital, Kamothe, in association with Inorbit mall, organised several activities to create awareness about the importance of quitting tobacco.

Carrying placards with hard-hitting messages like "You are a fool, if you think smoking is cool", 95 people including students, teaching and non-teaching staff of the organisation, conducted a rally from Vashi station to Inorbit mall yesterday evening. The rally and a series of other activities were part of college's annual attempt to create awareness about the ill-effects of using tobacco.

Initiated by Dr Sabita Ram, dean of the college, the anti-tobacco drive is being organised since last two years. "One cannot force people to quit habits like smoking or chewing tobacco; it has to be done voluntarily. We can only create mass awareness about the harmful and sometimes fatal effects of this substance abuse," said Dr Priyanka Machale, senior lecturer.

Wearing t-shirts with anti-tobacco slogan gave the group a solidarity. The rally was followed by a flash mob and a skit. Around eight interns depicted the mal-effects of tobacco. "This was followed by a signature campaign and a drawing competition for kids with the theme 'healthy teeth'," said Jasica Harold, one of the interns. She added, "This year World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged countries to increase taxes levied on tobacco and related products so as to discourage its use. It is a good move that has to be implemented far and wide."

Interested people were also screened for oral cancer and check-up was conducted for precancerous lesions.
