Samajwadi Party leader Amanmani Tripathi allegedly murdered his wife Sara, and used a fake road accident as a cover, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) claimed in its charge sheet filed on Saturday. Sara was allegedly being subjected to physical torture by the accused, who was arrested in November last.

“During investigation, it was found that Sara Singh was allegedly being subjected to physical torture and cruelty by the accused. She was allegedly murdered on July 9, 2015, with a premeditated plan by the accused and his accomplices, after which a road accident was faked and presented as the cause of death,” said RK Gaur, spokesperson CBI. According to officials, Sara had married Amanmani, 34, at an Arya Samaj temple in Aliganj area of Lucknow in July 2013.

Sara was reportedly killed in a car crash on National Highway-2 when the couple were on their way to the national capital last year. Amanmani had come out unscathed in the accident, prompting Sara’s mother Seema Singh to suspect the death and lodge an FIR against Amanmani and his family members. The case was later taken over by the CBI under sections 120-B, 302, 498 A of the Indian Penal code.

Amanmani is the son of influential politician Amarmani Tripathi and Madhumani Tripathi, both convicted in the murder of poetess Madhumita Shukla 12 years ago and serving life terms. Amanmani was also arrested in connection with another case of kidnapping in Lucknow last year. Sara’s mother had alleged that Amarmani and Madhumani were against the marriage of her daughter with Amanmani and had accused the senior couple of conspiring to kill Sara.

The arrested accused was in news when Shivpal Yadav, during a feud with UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, announced the candidature of Amanmani from Nautanwa assembly seat in Maharajganj. In October, Akhilesh had said that he had “no idea” about a new list of SP candidates which included Amanmani’s name.
