Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi today expressed their deepest condolences on the demise of veteran party leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister N Dharam Singh.

Dharam Singh held a special place in the hearts and minds of the people by his grit, determination and hardwork on the ground, Sonia said in her message.

He will always be remembered for his work and commitment in a career spanning five decades, she said.

She also conveyed condolences and prayers to the wife and family of Dharam Singh and hoped that his legacy and goodwill shall always remain a beacon of light.

Condoling his death, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi described him as a people's leader.

"Former Karnataka CM Dharam Singhji was a people's leader, with a distinguished career of over five decades. My condolences on his passing," he tweeted.

Singh (83), who was ailing for the last few months, fainted at his home in Bengaluru and was rushed to M S Ramaiah hospital where doctors declared him dead about 40 minutes later.

Singh headed the Congress-JD(S) coalition government from 2004 to 2006. A nine-time MLA and a former Member of Parliament, he had also headed the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.
