Congress leaders and workers made a beeline outside 10-Janpath on Saturday, to greet Sonia Gandhi on her 71st birthday. Among those who visited her residence were former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Her son and president-elect of party Rahul Gandhi arrived in Delhi early morning to greet her and then returned to Ahmedabad to continue campaign. This is perhaps last birthday of Mrs Gandhi as Congress president, the post she held for 19 years. She was first elected the Congress President in 1998.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended birthday greetings to Mrs Gandhi. "Birthday greetings to Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi. I pray for her long life and good health," he said in a message on Twitter. In the wake of not keeping good health, Sonia had skipped campaigning for the party in the Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, giving full command to her son Rahul in selecting candidates and leading the party in the campaign.

Rahul arrived at her residence early morning taking time out of the campaign. He later took another flight back to Ahmedabad without going through official protocol reserved for SPG protectees. He stood in queue while boarding a flight from Delhi, apparently to show his humbleness. The party released a photo showing him standing in the queue.

Sonia also met a number of leaders, including Rajya Sabha Opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, his Lok Sabha counterpart Mallikarjun Kharge as also several office-bearers and former chief ministers. Former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat was seen beating drums as folk dancers performed outside Sonia's residence.

Others who greeted her included Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who said "Warm birthday greetings to Congress President Sonia Gandhi ji. On the occasion of your birthday, I wish for your good health and long life," and Ashok Gehlot, former Rajasthan CM and AICC general secretary in-charge of Gujarat, who sent a message: "I extend my warm birthday greetings to Congress President Smt Sonia Gandhi ji. Wish her a healthy, happy and long life."
