Days after posters claiming Rahul Gandhi had gone missing from his electoral constituency in Amethi, this time it was his mother and  AICC president Sonia Gandhi to face the same consequence. Angry with their leader’s long absence from her Parliamentary constituency, the people of Rae Bareli have put up notices in the busy markets and bustling areas, claiming that Mrs Gandhi has gone missing from her political seat.

The AICC president has been unable to visit Rae Bareli for over a year because of her ill-health and busy schedule.

Rae Bareli has been a Gandhi bastion since 1951, from the time when Feroze Gandhi became MP from the region. Later, in 1967, Indira Gandhi adopted it as her constituency. Sonia Gandhi has been the MP from Rae Bareli four times in a row since 2004.

Significantly, what is written on the posters, claiming that Sonia Gandhi is missing, is similar to what was written about her son and Congress vice president Rahul. The posters, that reported Sonia Gandhi was missing, read: “The MP from Rae Bareli, Sonia Gandhi, is missing due to which all development works have come to a halt. The people of Rae Bareli feel cheated because of her behaviour. Anyone who informs of her whereabouts will be rewarded.”

According to sources, the two incidents have angered some of the local Congressmen. They feel that it was done deliberately to discredit the two leaders who, despite all odds, have stood with the people of Rae Bareli and Amethi. The Congressmen were seen removing the posters. “It seems to be the handiwork of the RSS and the BJP,” charged VK Shukla, Rae Bareli district Congress president.
