Soldier Chandu Chavan, who had crossed LoC inadvertently after India's surgical strike last year, today immersed in a sacred pond near here the ashes of his grandmother, who had died during his captivity by Pakistan.

Chandu immersed his grandma Leelabai ashes, preserved since her death on October 1 last year, in sacred Ramakund pond near here as one of the first tasks after his return back home for the first time following his release from the captivity of the Pakistan army early this year in January as a goodwill gesture.

Chandu's elder brother Bhushan Chavan and other relatives too were also present on the occasion.

Chavan reached his home at Borvihir village in Dhule district of Maharashtra along with Union Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre yesterday around noon.

The 22-year-old jawan from 37 Rashtriya Rifles had gone missing on September 29 last year after inadvertently crossing the LoC. It had later transpired that he was taken into the custody by Pakistani army.

Unable to bear the news, Chandu's grandmother Leelabai had died of cardiac failure on October 1. The family, however, had decided to wait for Chandu to return home to immerse her ashes.

"I thank people who supported the Chavan family. I also thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi, minister of state for defence Subhash Bhamre and state government for their attempts to release me from Pakistan," said Chavan, who broke down after immersing ashes of his grandmother.
