Amid violent protests demanding his resignation for his alleged involvement in the solar scam, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Friday moved the petition in High Court seeking to quash the FIR ordered against him by Thrissur court.

Meanwhile, The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) members held a massive protest which turned violent as the police resorted to using teargas to disperse the crowd.

Outside the Kerala Secretariat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing also agitated demanding Chandy's ouster.

The petition will be heard today later in the day.

Putting up a brave face, Chandy had denied the charges levelled against him and said "he cannot be removed from the post by raising false allegations and disgracing him."

The chief minister asserted that he would resign and withdraw from public life if the allegations were proved right, hours after Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge (Vigilance), Thrissur, directed the vigilance to register an FIR against Chandy and Arayadan in the case.

Continuing her attack on Chandy, Saritha S Nair, prime accused in the solar scam, has alleged that he had telephoned her mother to influence her not to reveal facts related to the case while she was lodged in jail in 2013.

A day after she alleged that she had paid bribes totalling Rs 1.90 crore to a close aide of Chandy and Rs 40 lakh to power minister Arayadan Mohammed, Saritha said she could produce evidence to prove her charges with regard to alleged involvement of influential people in the scam. Chandy and Arayadan have rejected the allegations.

BJP has also demanded immediate resignation of Chandy saying he has no 'locus standi to be in his chair following state vigilance court's order.

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also hit out at the Congress high command for "looking the other way" in cases of corruption involving its state leaders and said that it should now "speak out".
