Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) has deployed two specially trained sniffer dogs to curb the drug trafficking in Malwa-Mewar opium belt spread across Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh which included Neemuch district.

The belt is one of the few places in the world where poppy is cultivated under the supervision of the government authorities for legitimate medical needs.

"Two drug sniffing dogs - five-year old Mona and two- year old Angel - were brought here from the Border Security Force (BSF) centre at Tekanpur (Gwalior) to fish out drugs.

This is a sensitive zone as far as drug trafficking and opium processing is concerned," Assistant Narcotics Commissioner, Neemuch, G S Chouhan informed.

Chouhan said that poppy has a short growing season from September to March and started ripening with the change of season. The farmers need to slit poppy bulbs to bleed the opium during this period. Generally, the farmers slit the bulbs in the evening and collect opium next day.

"The drug traffickers get active during this period as crop started ripening and farmers slit the poppy bulb to collect opium, which comes out of the bulb like a milky substance. During this period, an extra vigil is needed and dogs help in searching out the narcotics substance," the official added.

He said that one of two dogs - Mona - was posted in Chhittorgarh of Rajasthan while another dog Angel was posted in Neemuch district of Madhya Pradesh.

"The blood line of Angel is the same like famous dog Janjeer, who helped in making several seizure of RDX in Mumbai. Both the dogs were given training to sniff out the narcotics," he added.

Chouhan informed that the Mona is female lebra dog and able to sniff all types of drugs. Heroin worth Rs 3-crore was seized from the traffickers in Punjab with Mona's help.

These dogs reached with their handlers, who are carrying out searches along with the CBN officials.
