Smriti Irani to be given Z cover security

HRD minister Smriti Irani may soon get Z category security cover. According to sources, the intelligence bureau that assesses threat perception to VIPs also has recommended stepping up Irani's security cover from Y to Z based on inputs of possibility of attack on her by disgruntled youth.

The union home ministry that analyses IB's assessment and takes the final call on upgrading security is soon expected to grant Z category security cover to the minister, sources said.

Smirti Irani has been in the thick of controversy on several issues related to various universities and academic institutions like FTII Pune, JNU and Hyderabad University where she often had to face gherao by the angry students' union.

The threat assessment inputs said that the minister could face serious attack during agitations and when she out on a visit to some university or institution.

As Z category protectee, Irani will be given 24 fully armed NSG commandos for round the clock protection, including at the residence. Her Z category security cover will have to be maintained by the states as per the norms.
