Major setback for BJP in Thane Municipal Elections, Shiv Sena manages to bag 67 seats.
Shiv Sena sweeped Thane Municipal (TMC) polls with a clear majority by bagging 67 seats in the 131 member corporation, while National Congress Party became the second largest party and was relegated to opposition.
Shiv Sena party workers gathered at 12 vote counting centres on February 23 to celebrate their victory. Though NCP managed to come strong, results did not work out in their favour as they managed to secure only 34 seats. It was followed by BJP with 23 seats, Congress with 3 and 4 seats to others.
Najeeb Mulla, accused in Suraj Parmar suicide case and a NCP leader, won the elections against Shiv Sena and BJP in ward no 10. Eknath Shinde, Guardian Minister and Senior Shiv Sena leader, said, “We are happy with the results and we have shown our strength in the civic polls.”
Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik's son Purvesh and wife Parisha were also elected to the corporation. Parisha Sarnaik said, “We are happy that we got support from people. I am proud that we will be able to represent people in corporation.” Parisha defeated a former senior Congress leader Sudhakar Chavan, “Its a tribute to the renowned builder Suraj Parmar who was forced to end his life,” she said.
MLA Pratap Sarnaik, said, “The results are overwhelming and we are happy that Thanekars believed in us and voted for us. We believe in development and will provide all the amenities required.”
On the other hand, Sumit Bhoir, son of MLA Subhash Bhoir from Kalyan Constituency lost to Babaji Patil,a senior leader from NCP.
Sandeep Malvi, PRO for Thane Municipal Corporation said, “We will be conducting the further procedure for the formation of corporation in this week and Civic Chief will preside over the meeting.”
