After facing huge embarrassment in failing to control Panchkula mayhem on Friday, Haryana police turned Rohtak into a fortress with police and paramilitary forces deployed in and around the city. Heavy police presence was witnessed inside the city while more than 10,000 personnel manned Sunaria jail where self-proclaimed godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been lodged after being convicted of two rape cases. A temporary court was set up and CBI judge Jagdeep Singh was flown specially from Panchkula to announce the quantum of sentence on Monday.

Fortifying the neighbouring town of Delhi, Rohtak was wrapped under multi-layered security with 28 companies of paramilitary troops on strict vigil in the city. The police had declared high alert on Sunday, with the district administration closing down schools and colleges on Monday. The forces were taking extra precautionary measures to prevent Dera followers from entering the Haryana town so as to avoid a redux of Panchkula rampage.

Not willing to take any chances, the police had also seven-layer security in place around Sunaria jail which is located on the outskrits of Rohtak, 10 kilometres outside, on Delhi-Hisar highway. The prison was completely cordoned off, and heavy patrolling was being done on the highway, also known as NH-9, with entrance from Maharaja, Hisar and Panipat side under tight security. Only authorised persons were allowed to move within a distance of 10 km of the premises. All vehicles entering Rohtak were scrutinised thoroughly, and travellers were also frisked for weapons, and other objectionable material. Belongings carried by them were also searched, and according to sources, they were also asking people to make calls to relatives/friends they claimed to be visiting.

A senior police official said that the police were fully prepared to take on miscreants in case they plan to brew trouble on Monday when the court handed over 20 years imprisonments to the controversial godman in two 15-year-old rape cases.

Meanwhile, in Rohtak, in spite of an underlying tension, life went as usual. Roads were comparatively deserted and business was slow in prominent markets in the city. Most of the residents preferred to stay indoors as educational institutions were also shut for the day. As a preemptive measure, the police had sealed more than 10 deras of the Dera Sacha Sauda located inside the town.
