At a time when the principal debate in the country is about intolerance and bad blood, here is a piece of news that's heart-warming.

Rahim (58) feels lucky to get a new lease of life after the family of Ram (25) gave their consent to donate the latter's kidney on Friday after he was declared brain dead at Aurangabad's United Sigma hospital.

Rahim, who has been suffering from end-stage kidney disease for the last five years, has been on dialysis for the last 10 months.

"Ram's family has been like a god to us. We wish to meet his mother and thank her for giving Rahim a new lease of life. She is like a mother who has given new birth to him," said Hafiz Patel, Rahim's nephew.

Rahim, who resides in Aurangabad and is a businessman, was informed on Friday night. "We were informed at night that the blood group matched. We immediately left for the hospital. Kidney transplant happened the other day," said Patel.

Rahim is currently recuperating in the hospital and will be discharged soon.

Dr Himanshu Gupta, chief administrator, Seth Nandlal Dhoot hospital, Aurangabad, said: "Rahim was lucky. We are thankful for Ram's family and we want others to take inspiration from the Ram-Rahim story and come forward with cadaver donations."

Ram, from the Vidarbha region, met with an accident on a highway at Buldhana. He was shifted to Aurangabad's United Sigma hospital where he was declared brain dead.

His organs were harvested at the hospital. With Ram's family agreeing to donate his organs, it became the first cadaver donation in Marathwada.

State health authorities helped in creating a green corridor and the other kidney and liver were sent to Mumbai for renal transplant and the heart was sent to Chennai.

According to Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) officials, the organ retrieval procedure began at 1.30 am on Friday and was completed at 4.30 am.
