Ten days after the brutal murder of Mohammad Afrazul Khan in Rajasthan's Rajsamand, migrant workers from West Bengal are leaving the state in large numbers, a report said today.

According to a report by The Indian Express, most of the quarters in Dhoinda village in the district where Afrazul lived are locked. Many of the occupants of these quarters were from Bengal's Malda, the home district of Afrazul.

Afrazul lived in Dhoinda village with his son-in-law and a cousin.

“I was in Rajasthan since the past decade to earn money but after seeing Afrazul’s half-charred body, I can’t stay here any longer,” Mohammed Ziaul Haq, a labourer, told the newspaper.

Around 180 migrants from Malda lived in this village, with most working as labourers in the construction industry, according to a report in Scroll. Another report on the website claimed that over a hundred Muslim migrants have fled Rajsamand since the murder.

There were many others like who are either leaving the state or preparing to do so as soon as feasible. Those who have stayed are distrustful of strangers.

“We are not safe here and that’s why we are going back to West Bengal. We may earn less but at least our families won’t have to worry about our safety,” another labourer, Mohammed Rafiul, told the daily.

Mohammad Afrazul, a labourer from Malda district, was hacked and burnt to death in Rajsamand district of Rajasthan on December 6. His alleged killer Shambhulal Regar burnt him alive and also uploaded a video of the crime on social media. Regar was later arrested.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has  demanded "exemplary action" against the alleged killer.

State BJP chief Dilip Ghosh recently said that people of West Bengal were going to the other states as the Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in the state had failed to create jobs.

In response, Banrejee said it was only normal for the people of other states to come to Bengal and vice versa.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had also promised jobs to those willing to return to West Bengal.

She had said, “People of Rajasthan, UP, and Bihar work in Bengal. They have made this place their motherland and we have welcomed them as well. But if a person from West Bengal went to work in Rajasthan, why was he murdered? If these people want to return to Bengal, they can get their names enrolled at the respective district magistrate’s office.

We will ensure that they get 200 days’ work in a year. The state can also provide for one-time financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to people like these, to set up their own business unit.”
