Rajasthan PhD student suicide: Professor, HoD, Dean named in FIR

Initial reports suggested that the student was under depression after allegedly being harassed by research guide and others, police said.

A professor, a research guide and a dean of Central University of Rajasthan have been booked in connection with the alleged suicide of a PhD scholar in the varsity, police said on Sunday.

The body of Mohit Chauhan, who was pursuing his doctorate in Mathematics at the Ajmer-based university, was found hanging from the ceiling inside his hostel room on Friday evening.

The case was registered on Saturday on a complaint by Mohit's father Dinesh Kumar against assistant professor Vidyottama Jain, under whom he was doing his PhD, head of the Mathematics department D C Sharma, and Dean (Research) Aditya K Gupta with Bandarsindari police station in Ajmer rural, they said.

"The FIR was lodged under section 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide) yesterday," the police said.
