Days after a viral video of a Rajasthan man getting hacked to death in the name of love jihad went viral, the woman, who accused Shyamlal Regar referred to as his ‘Hindu sister’,  has said she has nothing to do with him, and he did not try and save her, as he had told the police.

According to an Indian Express report, the woman, now aged 20, said she went to West Bengal with one Mohammed Bablu Sheikh. She returned in 2013 on her own because she did not like it there. She now lives in Rajasthan with her mother and brother.

The woman told the daily that she knew Regar as he belonged to the same community and had even tied a rakhi on his hand. When she told her mother that she wanted to return to Rajasthan, Regar volunteered to bring her back. “I refused to go with him and said that I will come back on my own,” she said.

The woman said it was unfair to say that Regar murdered Mohammad Afrazul because of this incident. “He knew Bengali contractors and labourers in Rajsamand because until establishing his marble business, he worked as a labourer,” said the woman.

The woman has also denied Regar’s claims that Bablu Sheikh’s associates were threatening him for ‘rescuing the woman’, stating that she had not been in contact with Sheikh since she left Malda in 2013.

The news of the murder went viral after a video of the horrific killing was circulated on social media. In the video, Regar is seen repeatedly attacking Afrazul with a sickle, dousing his fallen body with kerosene and burning him alive.

Raigar does not have a criminal background, as was being thought earlier. "He was a marble trader for nearly a decade, primarily operating in Rajsamand, Gurugram, and Anand in Gujarat. His parents live in Anand but are originally from Rajasthan. He has three daughters and the youngest is undergoing treatment for a mental disorder. She also gets a government pension," Srivastav said.

Commenting on the incident, DGP O P Galhotra said:"It is a heinous act that no person of sane mind would ever commit. The home minister had directed to form an SIT under SP, Rajsamand. The investigation was completed within 24 hours, and the main accused was arrested. He is being interrogated. Since the investigation is in a preliminary stage, not much can be said right now."
