Heavy rains continued to lash Valparai in this district for the third day today, resulting in rivers and dams filling up fast.

Meanwhile, schools in Valparai remained closed for a second day today owing to the rains even as search is on for a student, who was washed away yesterday when he tried to take bath in a river in the area.

With the onset of South-West Monsoon, Valparai and surrounding areas in this district have been receiving copious rains, due to which many rivers and dams were filling up, official sources said.

Residents have been cautioned not to go near rivers and move to safer places from low-lying areas, as there was likelihood of flash floods.

Police said due to rains in the past few days, tourists and public have been asked not to go near Monkey falls.

Water level in Sholayar dam had risen to 72.74 feet this morning from 59.51 feet yesterday, while it is also increasing in Siruvani dam, the main drinking water source for Coimbatore.
