Soon after recommending to the centre that the cow be made the national animal, Rajasthan High Court judge Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma defended his stance stating that the cow helps us in ‘every possible way’.

Citing Hindu scriptures, including The Ramayana and the Vedas, Justice Sharma said that cow’s milk has always been used to cure various diseases. “I have made the recommendations to the centre. It is the voice of my soul that is talking,” he told the media outside the court.

On questioned why the cow should be made the national animal, Justice Sharma said that the peacock was made the national bird of India because ‘it is a Brahmachari’.  Peacock has pious qualities just like cow -- Peahen doesn't need to have sex to get pregnant, it just swallows 'tears' of the peacock," he said.

While addressing the life imprisonment for cow slaughter, Justice Sharma said that his suggestion would be imposed only for the state of Rajasthan, but was hopeful that a law would eventually be passed across the country.
