Ahead of the municipal polls, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal promised abolishing house tax, if the Aam Aadmi party was voted to power, on Saturday. This was not the only big promise. The Aam Admi Party (AAP) chief also said that he will waive off the pending house tax dues once they emerge victorious.

The CM called the existing tax structure as 'draconian', alleging it has become a means of corruption for municipal councillors and officers. The MCD is trifurcated into —North, South and East. The corporations go to polls on April 23.

The AAP is trying hard to make its way through the municipal polls to establish its mark over Delhi. This has become even more significant in view of their poor performance in the Punjab and Goa Assembly polls.

"As soon AAP comes to power in the three corporations with full majority, we will abolish house tax and waive all the pending dues with immediate effect. We are making this promise with full responsibility and after thorough study and planning," said Kejriwal while addressing a conference.

The CM also promised to make Delhi a modern city if the party wins the MCD polls. Banking on populist measures once again, Kejriwal promised that within a year of coming to power in the MCDs, the AAP administration would make the cash-strapped civic bodies self-reliant.

"We will make sure that the corporations' finances are restored and that employees get their salaries by the seventh of every month," he said. About abolishing the house tax, he said AAP has worked out the arithmetic and the money to be saved by containing corruption will be utilised to cover the shortfall in revenue.
