Home they brought their warrior dead!

Family of Naib Subedar Ram Singh of 6-Dogra was preparing to celebrate his homecoming when they got the news about his death in Manipur.
Just hours before Singh had called his wife saying that he has started his journey from Manipur back home. But the journey back home was short-lived as the militants ambushed the convoy killing 20 soldiers, including Ram Singh of Swankah-More village in Vijaypur Jammu.

Singh was among the six soldiers from  Jammu and Kashmir who made the country proud by laying down their lives fighting gallantly with heavily armed militants in Manipur.

“He (Ram Singh) had completed his tenure and was all set to be posted in Chandigarh where his battalion was to be deployed after serving in Manipur”, said Balkar Singh, cousin of slain Ram Singh.

Having joined army in 1994, Naib Subedar Ram Singh belonged to the family of soldiers in Jammu division. Singh’s father and all his three uncles were in army. Most of his cousins are also serving in the Indian army. However he has become the first soldier to have been killed in action.

A trained commando, Ram Singh’s ability and agility was so popular that he was repeatedly posted in prestigious High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) in Gulmarg and Sonamarg where he was entrusted the job of training the soldiers in the high altitude warfare.

Pride and pain galore in the family as they mourn the loss of the brave heart.   “Entire family has slipped into the shock and mourning. But we are also proud that our brother has laid down his life for the country”, said Ved Prakash, elder brother of Ram Singh.

Just 45 kilometres from Vijaypur, family of Havldar Satpal Bhasin is quietly mourning the loss of their dear one. Bhasin’s brothers are yet to come to terms with the loss and have not broken the news to his wife and kids.

“His father had a major operation some months ago. So the brothers have not told him about his son’s death.  Family is in catch 22 situation how to break the news to his young kids who were waiting for their dad to come home”, said a relative as tears flow from his eyes.

Lance Naik Kuldeep Raj of Burn village was the youngest sibling and the only breadwinner in the family. Father of two and half year old daughter, Raj’s father had passed away just 11 months ago.

“He has two brothers who are working as daily labourers. Entire family was dependent on him because he was the only breadwinner”, said a relative.

A pall of gloom has descended in Jammu following the death of the six brave-hearts. It seemed that all roads were leading to these villages as people thronged the homes of the martyers to express solidarity with the families. “The families of the martyrs are waiting for the bodies so that they could perform the last rites”, said a villager.
