BJP winning considerable votes in the Aruvikkara by-election is a "very ominous" development, CPI(M) said on Wednesday, terming the results as "communalisation of electorate" in a literate and progressive state.
"This is a very very ominous development in Kerala. It is a development which is communalisation of Kerala electorate. Kerala remains country's most literate state, its electorate being the most conscious among various states in the country. "If in a state like that you have positive swing towards BJP...then it is a doubly serious matter. We have to see how BJP's vote percentage increased from 6 to 23 per cent," party General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said at a press conference in New Delhi.
Yechury noted that the party state unit is examining the whole issue and any further course of action will be taken based on its report. The leader maintained that it will not form any alliance or front with Congress for the West Bengal assembly election, scheduled to be held next year. Talking about the upcoming Bihar elections later this year, the leader said that forming 'Left Unity' will be the priority for the communist outfit for the elections.
Yechury also appreciated the coming together of JD(U) and RJD for the Bihar elections.
"Good if they are all coming together to fight the BJP. But how it will translate into action, we will have to wait and see. There are many hiccups in the way. Naturally, there will be. (But) I think the unity against communal threat of BJP is a positive thing. "The Left has decided that we will, our first priority is, as we are talking to other Left parties, is to contest the polls as United Left Front. The discussions are on. Let's see how the talks proceed," he said.
On asked about reports of West Bengal CPI(M) unit leaders, including party central committee member Gautam Deb, favouring an alliance with Congress for the state elections, Yechury reiterated that any such tie up was not on cards. "There is no question of forming alliance or front with Congress. As far as our party is concerned, this is our stand," he said, adding that Deb has written a letter to him clarifying his stand.
CPI(M) suffered defeat at the hands of Congress during by-poll for Aruvikkara assembly segment in Kerala yesterday. Congress' KS Sabarinadhan polled 56,448 votes, while CPI(M) candidate M Vijayakumar bagged 46,320 votes. However, it was BJP candidate O Rajagopal who sent shock waves by gaining 34,145 votes, making the contest a fierce one.
