Opposition National People's Party (NPP) today dared Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to face a probe by the National Investigation Agency following claims that he had sought support of a militant outfit in the Assembly election next year.

Sangma, however, termed the allegations as baseless.

"If the chief minister is really terming the allegation as baseless, I don't think he should worry about NIA investigation," NPP spokesman James K Sangma said today.

"It (NIA probe) will set the record straight and bring about clarity in the whole situation and will establish that Meghalaya does not have politico-militant nexus," he added.

NPP's challenge came following allegations made by the banned Khasi rebel outfit HNLC that the chief minister had sent feelers seeking its support in the 2018 Assembly polls.

Claiming that similar allegations were made by a former ANVC(B) leader two years ago, James said that NPP has time and again demanded that politico-militant nexus be investigated by the NIA.

He said that the party was not in favour of an investigation into it by state police to avoid doubts.
