PM Modi announces creation of 10,000 more MBBS seats across India

The Prime Minister also added that four medical colleges in Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Madurai will be upgraded.

Prime Minister Modi has said that the government  would create 10,000 additional MBBS seats. He was speaking at an event in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

A report in Deccan Chronicle states that Modi stated that 10,000 additional MBBS seats would be created in some medical colleges across the country. 

The Prime Minister also added that four medical colleges in Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Madurai will be upgraded. There will also be 355 more MBBS seatscreated in Tamil Nadu.

This was Modi's first visit as Prime Minister to Coimbatore, which is seen as a bastion of BJP support.

He also inaugurated the Rs 580 crore building for Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College and Hospital and formally handed it over the college to the Tamil Nadu Government added the daily.

“The central government is committed to upgrading  medical facilities infrastructure in the country. We propose to increase 10,000 more MBBS seats at the medical colleges across the county. So far, the approvals have been given for 23 colleges to increase 700 MBBS seats.

"Of this, approval has been given for four colleges in Tamil Nadu including for Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Madurai to increase 355 MBBS seats”, Modi reportedly said.

The ESIC Medical College Hospital  which was constructed at a  cost of Rs 580 crores on a 36 acre land  at Varatharajapuram in Cpimbatore will be run by the Tamil Nadu government. Modi was quoted as saying this was proof of his government's commitment to cooperative federalism.
