Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his trip to Daman on Saturday where he would be launching several development projects, hailed the union territory (UT) for its perseverance, and said that it was like being in a mini-India.

As part of his trip, PM Modi launched projects worth Rs 1,000 crore in Daman and Diu. “Never before has projects worth Rs 1,000 crore been launched at once in the past in Daman.” The Prime Minister also remotely flagged off the first fight connecting Daman & Diu with Ahmedabad under Udaan scheme.

“It is wonderful how Daman has become a mini-India. People from all over the country live and work here,” PM Modi said in his speech.

He also urged the people of Daman to focus on cleanliness, saying that prospects of tourism increase if the place is clean. Daman is a popular weekend getaway from Mumbai, and other parts of Gujarat. Famous for its black sand beaches, Daman also has several forts.

PM Modi also hailed the Union Territory for becoming Open Defecation Free (ODF). In December 2017, Daman and Diu, with a population of less than two and a half lakh, became the second Union Territory (UT) after Chandigarh to achieve this.

Confirming Daman and Diu’s ODF status, Parameswaran Iyer, Secretary Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation shared the news on a social networking site.

“I congratulate the people and local administration for making this place ODF. This is a big step. I also see mass movements in Daman towards cleanliness, using e-rickshaws and CNG,” he added.

Earlier, PM Modi arrived in Surat where he handed over certificates to beneficiaries of various official schemes.

Later in the evening, he will be flagging off of the 'Run for New India Marathon' in Surat.

The Prime Minister will visit Chennai, Puducherry and Gujarat in the next two days
