The Allahabad High Court on Saturday directed Uttar Pradesh government counsel to seek instructions within a week to file its response on a PIL seeking a direction against deployment of police around the Garbh Griha, the place where main deities are installed, of Kashi Vishwanath temple at Varanasi.

A division bench of Justice Shree Narain Shukla and Justice Rajan Roy passed this order on a PIL filed by Hindu Personal Law Board through its president, Ashok Pandey.

The petitioner alleged that deployment of police there was causing inconvenience to devotees as sometimes police personnel throw them out and misbehaved with them, which hurt religious sentiments. The petitioner sought a direction for prohibiting deployment of police personnel inside the temple.

On behalf of the state government, Additional Advocate General Bulbul Godiyal contended that the PIL was not maintainable as the petitioner has no locus to file it. The court, while providing a week's time to seek instructions to place the state's response in the matter, fixed April 28 as the next date of hearing.
