The Patna High Court is in controversy after L Narasimha Reddy retired as Chief Justice on July 31 and a judge refused to attend his farewell party.

According to report in the Indian Express, Reddy who had  held the position Chief Justice for seven months, was accused of being a 'Moghal Baadshah' by Justice Dharnidhar Jha. Jha then refused to attend the retirement farewell function.

Jha addressed a four-page letter to Akhauri Mangla Charan Shrivastava, Chairman of the Bihar State Bar Council, saying the Chief Justice didn't deserve his participation in the farewell function held on August 1.

He also accused Chief Justice Reddy of having "no respect for the rules". He also said Reddy "smashed the whole administration not only of the HC but of the subordinate judiciary also." He also said that under Justice Reddy several sub-divisional courts had been set up "without there being any infrastructure."

He told the newspaper that writing a letter was the only way he could show his displeasure as the media did not criticise the judiciary for fear of contempt of court. "As Chief Justice, Justice Reddy took many decisions against rules settled by the Supreme Court. He acted in great haste and even passed judicial orders against rules,"  he added.

Justice Reddy responded to the letter criticising him. He spoke to Indiann Express and said "This gentleman has a very dubious track record. He was transferred due to serious allegations against him. He managed to return after citing ill health. Until I was there, he never uttered a single word to question my decisions, all of which were taken in full court meetings. And now he has written some letter that I have not seen. This is gross misconduct as he is levelling baseless allegations."

Justice Jha is set to retire next month.
